The Painted Stairs
A limestone hill on the edge of the capital holds a Hindu shrine 100 metres up, reached by 272 steps repainted in bands of pink, green and blue. A 42-metre gold Murugan stands at the bottom, macaques work the handrail, and at Thaipusam in January the whole hill fills with pilgrims carrying kavadi. Go early: the steps face the sun and the coaches arrive at ten.

The Rivers That Blink
On the mangroves of the Selangor river, above Kuala Selangor, colonies of Pteroptyx fireflies flash in unison along the berembang trees — thousands of them, in time, like a string of lights being switched. Boats go out after dark on a moonless night, and on the coast nearby the plankton glows blue in the wake. No flash photography, no torches; the light is the whole point.

The Red Apes
Orangutans live wild in exactly two places on earth, and Sabah has the easier half. The Sepilok centre outside Sandakan feeds rehabilitated apes at fixed times twice a day, on a platform in genuine rainforest, and the same trip usually adds proboscis monkeys and a sun-bear enclosure. Wild sightings are never promised; the platform makes it close to certain.
